Early Holiday Event to Aid Needy Youth

Share

The holiday celebration, complete with Christmas tree, planned for Moorpark’s community center this Sunday may be a bit premature.

But organizers of Catch-a-Star, an effort to provide holiday gifts to needy Moorpark children, hope the afternoon celebration will put city residents in the mood for early holiday shopping.

Catch-a-Star volunteers will fill a tree at the center with slips of paper, each representing a Moorpark child. Participants will then pick one or more slips and follow the gift-buying suggestions on each.

If the child in question wants or needs clothes, for example, the slip will list sizes and favorite colors. All gifts will cost a minimum of $20, said Connie Lawrason, wife of Mayor Paul Lawrason and a Catch-a-Star member.

The group hopes to collect gifts for more than 200 children, she said. All gifts must be delivered to the Moorpark Library by Dec. 15.

The kickoff celebration begins at 4 p.m. Sunday.
