Daytime Curfew

Share

Thank you for Cathy Werblin’s and Mimi Ko Cruz’s well-written and informative article regarding the adoption of a daytime curfew law in Seal Beach and surrounding cities.

The perception (by parents) is that the curfew law will stop the problem of truancy. Parents believe the new law will keep their teens in school.

As a high school student, I am compelled to state my concerns about this new law. My peers and I believe the law will not only violate the rights of teens, but will unfairly cost the parents many dollars through citations and fines. I have spoken to many of my peers and their parents.

A large majority of my peers oppose the law. We believe teens should be given a little freedom from overprotective parents.

We believe this law provides discomfort for students who are incorrectly judged as curfew violators. As a result of this discomfort, students will be less likely to respect authority.

Parents will initially be fined a $100 citation. If the student is found to be truant, subsequent fines can be increased to $500. These citations will end up costing the parents valuable money.

I believe the parents will suffer the most from this law. The fines and citations will lay a heavy burden between the regular electric, gas and telephone bills.
