People / Spotlight on achievers
Kit and Patrice Kirby and their three children have been named the city’s 1996 Family of the Year.
The Kirbys, who have lived in La Palma for 14 years, were honored at a City Council meeting this week, where officials praised them and the audience gave them a long round of applause.
The city’s Civic and Beautification Committee picks the winning family from among those nominated each year. Kathy Grover, a committee member, said Kit and Patrice Kirby “are parents totally devoted to their children--they are raising children who will be excellent adults.”
Grover also praised the Kirby family for its involvement in the community. The three Kirby children are involved in youth sports, and their parents are avid team supporters, she said. The Kirby children are Milissa, 14; Jeffrey, 11, and Patrick, 8.
The city’s Family of the Year competition is supported by the local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which makes an annual donation to the city to cover expenses for the competition.
