Paul Coffey says his heart is not in Hartford. He could have fooled the Montreal Canadiens.

Coffey, who has made it clear to the front office that he wants out, set up the first goal and scored the game-winner as the Whalers defeated the Canadiens, 3-1, Wednesday at Hartford, Conn.

“That’s what we’re paid to do. We’re professionals. The last thing you want to do is let the other 19 guys in this dressing room down,” Coffey said. “You’ve got to go out and play your hardest. That’s the most important thing.”

Coffey broke a 1-1 tie early in the third period, scoring through the legs of a partially screened Jocelyn Thibault.

Sean Burke made 34 saves to extend his unbeaten streak to 5-0-1.

Stephane Richer scored the only goal for Montreal, which has the NHL’s second-worst road record (1-8-2).

Colorado 6, Phoenix 0--Patrick Roy stopped 20 shots for his 34th career shutout and Sandis Ozolinsh and Jon Klemm each scored two goals as the Avalanche routed the Coyotes at Denver.

Roy moved in a 23rd place tie on the all-time career shutout list with Bill Durnam.

Dallas 3, Calgary 1--Brent Gilchrist scored two goals and goalie Roman Turek made 25 saves in his NHL debut, leading the Stars past the Flames at Calgary.

Gilchrist clinched the victory when he stole the puck from defenseman Tommy Albelin and beat goalie Trevor Kidd on a breakaway late in the third period.

Pat Verbeek scored the other Dallas goal. Dave Gagner was the only Flame to beat Turek.
