Conference Targets Reentry Students

Adults considering a return to college after several years in the work force, and students who have already made that step but are struggling to manage, will have some help today at a Cal State Northridge conference aimed at assisting reentry students through the maze of college life.

Hosted by the university’s Adult Re-Entry Program, the “Keys to Success” workshop is designed to answer any questions from those who have returned or are considering a return to college, said Dominic Grano, workshop coordinator.

“We are encouraging people to come back to school and we’re showing them how to do it,” Grano said. “We’re giving them the skills and the resources to do that.”

The 10th annual conference, which is free to the public, will include workshops on stress and time management, computer basics and career choices.

“These are things that are necessary today,” Grano said.

“Most reentry students, primarily over 30, have obligations in their lives, and they have to learn how to juggle it all. If you don’t control and master computers, they will control and master you.”

Workshop participants may take the Myer-Briggs Inventory Exam--an often costly career evaluation tool--at no charge.

The test will be scored and discussed by career counselors during the day.

Roger Moss, chairman of the university’s psychology department, will give a keynote speech at 9:15 a.m., with the workshops beginning at 10 a.m.

The event is open to students and the public.

Registration will begin at 8:45 a.m. in the Pasadena Room of the University Student Union, 18111 Nordhoff St.
