Stadium Proposal Is Up for Discussion

The college community and the public will be able to comment Monday on a proposal to build a stadium at Saddleback College.

The school’s trustees will open a hearing at 4:30 p.m. at the college library in Room 105. College officials said a decision on the stadium is not likely until Dec. 9.

The Long Beach Riptide, a minor league baseball team, is considering a move to Mission Viejo for the 1997 season. Riptide officials say they need a strong commitment within two to three weeks for purposes of scheduling and season ticket sales.

The college is working with city officials to determine how a new ballpark would be used.

“This is a public forum to hear what the citizens of Mission Viejo and the college community have to say about this project,” said Kathie Hodge, vice chancellor of educational services.

Hodge said response from residents so far has been “generally supportive of baseball in the community. . . . People in opposition have specific issues, like what the design will look like and taxpayer type of issues.”

The college’s concern centers on control of the facility and scheduling of events other than baseball, she said.
