Two Camp Pendleton Marines were fatally injured within minutes of each other in two separate accidents Sunday when one crashed his compact car into a utility pole in Westchester and the second lost control of his motorcycle in San Diego, police said.
About 1:20 a.m., Daniel Helgerson, 21, lost control of his car and clipped a fence before slamming head-on into a utility pole at Lincoln and Jefferson boulevards in Westchester. Police said Helgerson was pronounced dead at the scene.
About 20 minutes earlier, a 25-year-old Marine motorcyclist had veered into a guardrail as he merged from California 163 to Interstate 5 near downtown San Diego. His name has not been released pending notification of relatives.
