Detroit running back Barry Sanders reached two more rushing milestones in the Lions’ 31-14 loss to Chicago.

Sanders became the first player in NFL history to rush for 1,000 yards in eight straight seasons. And he passed O.J. Simpson for eighth place on the league’s career rushing list.

Sanders, needing only 18 yards, moved over 1,000 yards on his fourth carry of the game at soggy Soldier Field.

Sanders finished with 107 yards in 21 carries and now has 11,261 yards in eight seasons. He passed Simpson, who had 11,236 yards in 11 seasons.

John Riggins is seventh with 11,352 yards.

“Barry’s the best back to ever touch the football,” said Lion Coach Wayne Fontes.

“I feel fortunate. I’ve been consistent and stayed healthy,” said Sanders, who also had a 22-yard touchdown run.

“I’ve tried, really, in every play, every game just to compete. And for whatever reason, things have allowed me to be successful. I’ve had a lot of help from teammates.”
