Overtime Victory for Jaguars

For the Jacksonville Jaguars, there was plenty that was new--a record fifth victory, the first overtime victory in franchise history and their initial road win of the year.

For the Baltimore Ravens, it was the same old story.

The Jaguars fought back from a 15-point deficit in the final 13 minutes of regulation before Mike Hollis kicked a 34-yard field goal with 5:57 left in overtime Sunday for a 28-25 victory.

The first overtime victory in Jacksonville’s two-year existence gave the Jaguars five victories in a season for the first time. It was also their first road win since October 1995, when they defeat the Cleveland Browns--who now, of course, are the Ravens.

“A great win for us on the road. It was something this football team needed,” quarterback Mark Brunell said. “To win on the road, to get five wins, well, I just feel good right now.”

Running back Natrone Means, who ran for 21 yards in the final drive, said, “This is definitely something that we need. A win is always good, but now we got our first win on the road. Hopefully we got some things to build on.”

The Jaguars defeated the Browns twice last year and swept the Ravens this season. They’re 4-0 against the Browns-Ravens.

“Certainly going into a game like this you’ve got confidence because of that,” Brunell said. “It was a situation where we realized that we had been in an identical situation two weeks ago.”

That’s when Jacksonville scored 14 points in the final four minutes against Baltimore for a 30-27 victory. Baltimore (3-9) has lost seven of eight, and Sunday’s loss was the fifth time during the streak that the Ravens blew a lead in the fourth quarter.

“I feel silly standing up here and talking to you,” Raven quarterback Vinny Testaverde said. “Just take the same quotes from the last few weeks and write the same story.”
