Baylor Fires Reedy After 4-7 Finish

Chuck Reedy was fired as Baylor’s coach Sunday, one day after a blowout loss that left the Bears with their worst record since 1978 and a last-place finish in their inaugural season in the Big 12 South.

Reedy was in the fourth year of a five-year deal he received after Grant Teaff retired following the 1992 season. He received a contract extension last year, but was 4-7 this season.

Bob Bockrath, Alabama’s athletic director, refused to discuss the selection process that will be used to determine Gene Stallings’ successor as coach.

Defensive coordinator Mike Dubose, in his 11th year with the Crimson Tide, would be the most likely candidate on the staff to replace Stallings. Others include offensive coordinator Woody McCorvey and secondary coach Curley Hallman.

Colorado’s Rick Neuheisel and Miami’s Butch Davis also have been mentioned.

Purdue Coach Joe Tiller, 53, said he is looking forward to his new job with “anxious anticipation” and intends to lead the program back to prominence in the Big Ten.

Tiller, the coach of No. 21 Wyoming for the past six years, replaced Jim Colletto, who resigned.

After seven weeks at No. 3, Florida State (10-0) replaced Ohio State at No. 2 in The Associated Press’ Top 25 college football poll, following the Buckeyes’ 13-9 loss to Michigan.

Florida State plays top-ranked Florida (10-0) on Saturday in Tallahassee in the 31st meeting between teams ranked Nos. 1 and 2.

Ohio State (10-1) fell four spots to No. 6, while Rose Bowl opponent Arizona State (11-0) moved up to No. 3 after completing a perfect season with a 56-14 victory over Arizona.

Nebraska (9-1), the two-time defending national champion, moved up to No. 4, followed by Colorado, Ohio State, Brigham Young, Penn State, Tennessee and Notre Dame.
