City May Help Fund Renovation of Complex
The owner of the Plaza Patria Apartments may get $500,000 from the city’s redevelopment agency to pay for rehabilitation.
City Manager Terry Matz said the owner, Los Angeles-based Jan Development Co., will use the money to renovate apartments in the three-building complex and to pay for playground equipment.
The project was the subject of controversy in May because some community members believed the landlord was illegally evicting tenants.
Father Ed Poettgen of St. Polycarp Catholic Church said members of his congregation who lived in the complex on Court Street were told they had to leave because a rehabilitation project was set to begin.
According to state law, tenants required to move because of scheduled improvements are entitled to relocation benefits.
Poettgen said Monday that the evictions stopped when he and city officials intervened on behalf of the tenants.
