Council Votes to Close Pedestrian Tunnel

VAN NUYS — Responding to complaints about crime and graffiti, the Los Angeles City Council voted Wednesday to close a pedestrian tunnel on Stagg Street beneath the San Diego Freeway.
The closure was requested by Councilman Joel Wachs, who represents the Van Nuys area and has received complaints from neighbors about the tunnel.
In a letter to the head of the city’s Bureau of Engineering, Wachs said members of a church near the tunnel had complained that youths had vandalized church vans and picnic tables and broken the windows of the bishop’s car.
According to Wachs, the vandals have evaded police by running through the tunnel to the other side of the freeway.
Although the tunnel is within the jurisdiction of the California Department of Transportation, city officials said Caltrans will comply with the council’s request.
