Hans Klein; Press Chief for ’72 Munich Olympics, Diplomat
Hans “Johnny” Klein, 65, press chief for the 1972 Munich Olympic Games that were overshadowed by the attack on Israeli athletes by Palestinian terrorists. Klein, who had a distinguished career as a journalist, diplomat and lawmaker, was also Chancellor Helmut Kohl’s spokesman in 1989-90. After working for 10 years as a journalist, Klein joined Bonn’s Foreign Ministry and worked as a spokesman for German embassies in Jordan, Syria, Iraq and Indonesia. Elected to Parliament in 1976, Klein also served as minister for economic cooperation and as one of three deputy chairmen of the Bundestag, a post he held until his death. On Tuesday of heart disease in Bonn.
