SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

A long-proposed project for Central Park will probably move forward next week, when the City Council expects to approve a construction contract for new restrooms at the facility.

City Manager Daniel E. Keen said that if the council approves the contract at its meeting Tuesday, work will start in early January. Completion would be by late spring, in time for softball league and other games in the park, Keen said.

The city has for many years sought additional restrooms for the park but has been hampered by lack of money.

Mayor Duane Schuster worked to line up a $50,000 grant from county government to help build the restrooms. The rest of the money for the restrooms, projected to cost about $74,000, will come from city redevelopment funds.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, two new City Council members and one incumbent will be sworn in. Paul F. Walker and Alta E. Duke were elected Nov. 5 to four-year terms, ousting Schuster and Councilman Wally Linn. Two-term incumbent Eva Miner Bradford was reelected to a third four-year term.

After the three are sworn in, the council will elect a mayor and mayor pro tem.
