School Board Member Slavkin to Take New Job, Keep Old One

Share

Los Angeles Board of Education member Mark Slavkin announced Monday that he will begin working full time in February for the Getty Foundation’s Education Institute for the Arts.

However, under an unusual arrangement, Slavkin--who had previously indicated he would not run for reelection next spring--will continue to serve as a voting board member through the end of his term in June.

Primarily, Slavkin wants to participate in the selection of a replacement for Supt. Sid Thompson, who also will step down in June.

“The expectation is, Mark’s not going to be here very much, but he’ll cast votes on the big things,” Slavkin said. “It’s kind of a phase-out.”

At the Getty, Slavkin will focus on developing a kindergarten- through 12th-grade arts program for a group of LEARN reform schools.
