Mats Sundin scored his 500th NHL point on a short-handed goal to key the Toronto Maple Leafs’ 2-0 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday night at Toronto.

Wendel Clark also scored for the Maple Leafs, and Marcel Cousineau and Felix Potvin shared a 28-save shutout. Cousineau started but suffered a slight concussion late in the second period and couldn’t continue.

Sundin reached his milestone at 15:32 of the first period while killing teammate Kirk Muller’s slashing penalty. Sundin and the Blues’ Igor Kravchuk and Jim Campbell raced after a loose puck at Toronto’s blue line.

Kravchuk lagged behind as Sundin outmuscled the pair to gain possession. Campbell checked the puck away from Sundin, but Sundin stole it back as the two crossed the St. Louis blue line. Sundin, with Campbell hacking at him, made a 90-degree turn at the left-wing faceoff circle and, as he cut across the top of the crease, tucked a shot behind Grant Fuhr.

New Jersey 2, Florida 0--Martin Brodeur had 28 saves and assisted on a empty-net goal in the Devils’ victory at East Rutherford, N.J.

Brian Rolston and Dave Andreychuk scored for New Jersey, which handed the Panthers only their fourth loss of the season and first shutout.

New York 3, Calgary 1--Travis Green scored twice and added an assist, and Eric Fichaud stopped 25 shots for his first victory in a month as the Islanders won at Uniondale, N.Y.

Zigmund Palffy scored New York’s other goal, his team-leading 17th, helping the Islanders win for the third time in four games. Fichaud’s last victory came Nov. 2, a 6-1 triumph over Washington.

Rookie-of-the-year candidate Jarome Iginla scored for the Flames.

Vancouver 2, Detroit 2--Brendan Shanahan scored a power-play goal with 2:28 left in the third period, and the Red Wings and Canucks finished deadlocked at Detroit.

Vancouver was without top players Trevor Linden and Alexander Mogilny. Linden had his consecutive games streak stopped at 482 after sustaining a knee injury Sunday at Philadelphia. Mogilny was out because of flu.

Sergei Fedorov scored the other goal for Detroit, which is 1-2-1 in its last four games.

Hartford 4, Pittsburgh 4--Jeff O’Neill and Geoff Sanderson scored in the third period to give the Whalers the tie with the Penguins at Pittsburgh.

Despite losing a two-goal lead in the last 12 minutes, the Penguins have a season-best four-game unbeaten streak (2-0-2). Pittsburgh failed in its attempt to win consecutive games for the second time this season.
