1994 Zind-Humbrecht Muscat “Herrenweg” ($21.99).
The exotic floral nose makes this Muscat from one of Alsace’s best producers seem like a sweet wine. The surprise is that it isn’t. The interplay between the Muscat’s lush perfume and the cool, steely mineral taste is what makes Zind-Humbrecht’s Muscat from the Herrenweg site so intriguing. Serve it as an aperitif--with canapes, smoked salmon or a little blue cheese. A thoroughly beguiling wine.
If you like the Herrenweg, look for Zind-Humbrecht’s grand cru Muscat “Goldert.” It’s a bit more expensive and available in only limited quantities.
