Wanna Bette

She has a home in Laguna Beach and proudly calls herself “the queen of Save Laguna Canyon.” So would it be too much to ask Bette Midler to sing for us a little more often?

Well, maybe. Certainly, none of her many fans who showed up at the Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa on Tuesday were feeling greedy. They were just thrilled that the Divine Miss M was here at all, this time headlining her “Diva Las Vegas” extravaganza.

It’s been two years since Midler played in the area, but fans hadn’t forgotten how to act . . . or dress. The usual range of glam dressers mixed among the Leatherette crowd who probably have posters of Midler’s backup group, the Harlettes, stuck up under votive candles in their living room.

The mostly female crowd seized the opportunity to show off its spots: leopard, for the most part.

As with Bette’s performance, anything goes.
