Police Offer Crime Preparedness Course

The Ventura Police Department is offering residents an opportunity not for the faint at heart--to be “scared safe.”
The 3-year-old program, which uses actors to simulate real crime scenarios, seeks to teach residents about potential dangers and help them learn how to cope with those emergencies should they arise, said coordinator Laura Robinson.
“We’ve found that the old adage ‘To be forewarned is to be forearmed’ is true,” Robinson said. “People say that they learn a lot about themselves. It’s a real eye-opener.”
The scenarios range from dealing with an overly aggressive panhandler to being robbed at gunpoint.
“What people learn is that it’s best to be prepared for anything and to have a plan,” Robinson said.
Once participants go through the course, they will be debriefed and examine how they handled each situation.
The program will be offered Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Ventura Police Department. Participants must be over 18.
Registration is open. For more information, call Robinson at 339-4449.
