A Louisiana Republican who was defeated Nov. 5 in a bid for election to the Senate challenged his loss in a petition filed Thursday, contending that more than 10,000 votes were cast illegally.

State Rep. Woody Jenkins filed the challenge with the Senate Rules Committee and with the office of the Senate president, Vice President Al Gore.

Leaders of the Republican-controlled Senate have promised that Mary Landrieu, who defeated Jenkins by 5,788 votes, will be seated without prejudice when the 105th Congress convenes Jan. 7, while the charges are reviewed.
