NONCONFERENCE

* USC (2-0) vs. No. 14 NORTH CAROLINA (3-1) at Charlotte (N.C.) Coliseum

Time--4 p.m. Radio--KWNK (670)

After ho-hum victories over Long Beach State and Loyola Marymount, USC runs into powerhouse North Carolina in the Harris Teeter Pepsi Challenge, a tournament the Tar Heels have won the last four years. North Carolina is as talented as ever and jump-started after a season-opening loss to Arizona. Since falling to the Wildcats, North Carolina has averaged 91 points per game in three victories and has won by an average of 25.4 points. Guard Antawn Jamison, averaging 22.8 points, and swingman Vince Carter, 15.5, lead a team that presents matchup problems for the Trojans. USC will pin its hopes on Rodrick Rhodes, averaging 26.5 points, and will need Stais Boseman, who seems to have misplaced his scoring touch, to come around. The Trojans will match 6-foot-11 David Crouse against 7-3 Serge Zwikker at center and give up either size or athletic ability at almost every position. The winner will play the South Carolina-North Carolina Charlotte winner in Saturday’s championship game. Losers will play a consolation game.
