10 Appointed to Landfill Committee

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday appointed 10 community members to the Sunshine Canyon Landfill Community Advisory Committee, a body which will serve as a link between the neighborhood and the dump’s operator.

The landfill, located in the Santa Susana Mountains above Granada Hills, was reopened earlier this year after a years-long debate pitting the owner, Browning-Ferris Industries, against environmentalists and local homeowners.

This summer, the North Valley Coalition of Concerned Citizens--one of the chief opponents of the landfill--acknowledged that it had accepted about $60,000 to fight the dump from WMX Inc., one of Browning-Ferris’ fiercest trash-hauling competitors.

On Tuesday, several members of the coalition, including Wayde Hunter and Mary Edwards, were appointed to the new commission by Supervisor Mike Antonovich.

Antonovich also appointed to the committee Ronald S. Ford, president of the Granada Hills Chamber of Commerce; Patti Friedman, vice president of the Knollwood Property Owners Assn.; Kenneth E. Hayden, the owner of an engineering firm, and Anne Ziliak, a nutritionist.

Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky appointed Anna M. Kinzle, executive director of the Reseda Chamber of Commerce; Sandra L. Klasky, a director of development at CSUN; Esther Simmons, a homemaker, and George Wein, an architect.
