Forecasters Expect Storm to Clear Out of Region Today

The storm that boosted Los Angeles’ season rainfall total to nearly an inch above normal is on its way out of town.

Weather forecasters said skies will be clearing today--there’s only a 10% chance of showers tonight--and Thursday will be positively sparkling.

But the rain continued to cause problems Tuesday. Two boys were carried for more than a mile by the current in a rain-swollen flood control channel before they escaped.

Los Angeles city Fire Department spokesman Bob Collis said the 11-year-olds were in a dangerous area of the Pacoima Wash in the San Fernando Valley when one fell into the channel and the other jumped in to try to help him. It wasn’t immediately clear whether the boys got out by themselves or if citizens came to their rescue. They were taken to Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, but neither was suffering from hypothermia, Collis said. Both boys had scrapes and cuts.

The weekend forecast is for sunny and warmer weather. About 4 1/2 inches of rain for the rainy season had been recorded by dusk Tuesday at the Los Angeles Civic Center. Normal is about 3 1/2 inches. Officials said Monday’s 1.7-inch total at the Civic Center beat the record of 0.84 of an inch set Dec. 9, 1909.

“There’s no rain on the horizon,” said National Weather Service forecaster Mallory Hamm.

“We don’t see any rain for a week or so on our computer models,” said Times forecaster Curtis Brack of WeatherData Inc.
