MTA to Pay $400,000 a Year to Clean Up Near Bus Stops

Call it a clean sweep.

From now on, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority plans to tidy up at and near the 18,000 stops countywide that agency buses serve.

Joe Drew, who has tendered his resignation as chief executive officer of the MTA, said upkeep of bus stops has never been a function of the transit agency.

“This is an important addition to our extensive Customer First campaign, which is aimed at providing better service to the transit riding public,” he said.

The program will cost about $400,000 a year, most of which will be used to pay for supplies and equipment, said MTA spokesman Ed Scannell.

Crew members, who will be supervised by MTA employees, will be drawn from a pool of people ordered to perform community service by judges, Scannell said.
