Los Angeles Joins Lawsuit Against Tobacco Industry
The city of Los Angeles on Wednesday joined a lawsuit by San Francisco, 10 California counties and four health organizations accusing the tobacco industry of engaging in “deceptive and improper business practices,” including false advertising.
The lawsuit targets Phillip Morris Inc., R.J. Reynolds, Brown and Williamson and several tobacco industry organizations. In addition to seeking millions of dollars in financial compensation, the government agencies are demanding that the tobacco companies stop advertising that targets children in California.
The City Council voted to engage the private law firm that is handling the litigation, although the city would pay the attorneys only if they are successful.
