Modano Scores in Overtime to Propel Dallas

Mike Modano scored 27 seconds into overtime as the Dallas Stars rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat the Chicago Blackhawks, 3-2, Wednesday night at Chicago.

Defenseman Keith Carney misplayed the puck at center ice, and Modano and Greg Adams went into the Chicago zone on a two-on-one break against defenseman Chris Chelios.

Modano carried into the right faceoff circle, but his pass was blocked by Chelios. The puck, however, went directly back to Modano, and with goalie Jeff Hackett having moved in position for a possible shot by Adams, the net was wide open for Modano to score his team-high 13th goal.

The Stars are 15-2-3 when Modano gets a point, 4-8-0 when he is held scoreless.

New Jersey 2, Vancouver 1--Denis Pederson’s power-play goal at 8:42 of the third period lifted the Devils to victory at GM Place.

The Canucks set a team record for futility by managing only eight shots on goal in the game. Their previous low was 12.

The Devils recorded 30 shots.

The Canucks didn’t register a shot until 16:25 of the first, when Markus Naslund’s sharp-angle wrist shot was handled easily by Martin Brodeur.

Colorado 4, Edmonton 4--Joe Sakic set up all four Colorado scores, including the tying goal by Valeri Kamensky midway through the third period, and the Avalanche and Oilers tied at Edmonton Coliseum.

Kamensky scored twice. His 13th goal of the season at 8:10 of the final period ended the scoring.

Andrei Kovalenko scored twice for the Oilers. His 15th goal of the season and 100th in the NHL came with one second left on a power play, putting Edmonton ahead, 4-3, at 4:51 of the third period.

Buffalo 5, Tampa Bay 3--Derek Plante scored two goals and the Sabres ended the Lightning’s five-game unbeaten streak in the game at Buffalo’s Marine Midland Arena.

Plante’s second goal, a 40-foot slapshot from the right faceoff circle 1:38 into the third period, gave Buffalo a 4-2 lead. It was his team-leading 14th goal.

Calgary 3, Detroit 3--Defenseman Todd Simpson’s first NHL goal helped the Flames earn a tie with the Red Wings in the game at the Saddledome.

After Theoren Fleury drew three Detroit players behind the net, Simpson grabbed the loose puck and circled in front and scored at 8:25 of the third period.
