Maynard Paces L.A. Baptist

Senior guard Tim Maynard of L.A. Baptist couldn’t have picked a better time for his best offensive outing of the season.

Maynard, who is regarded more for his defense, scored 21 points to spark the Knights (8-0) to an 80-66 victory over Crespi in the semifinals of the Valencia High tournament.

Maynard shared high-scoring honors with teammate Aaron Davis, who scored 19 of his 21 points in the second half when the Knights broke open a close game.

The teams were tied at 32 at halftime, but L.A. Baptist never trailed in the second half.

Jermaine Sweet had 16 points for L.A. Baptist. Crespi (3-3) was paced by Rob Turner with 20 points and Ryan Hill with 16.

In other Valencia tournament games:

Valencia 52, Santa Paula 49--Point guard Jason Richardson scored Valencia’s final six points to rally the Vikings (6-2) in a semifinal game.

Richardson finished with 11 points.

The Vikings took the lead for good, 50-49, on a jumper by Richardson with 58 seconds remaining. Richardson sank two free throws with 20 seconds left.

Jerrohn Jordan scored 15 points for the Vikings and Eskias McDaniels scored 13.

Josh Jimenez led Santa Paula (2-5) with 21 points.

Jimenez missed a three-point attempt that would have tied the game with three seconds remaining.

Canyon 66, Ventura 55--Reserve center Mike Motherspaw scored 11 points in the fourth quarter for Canyon (5-2) in a consolation game.

Motherspaw and Steve Eernisse led Canyon with 15 points each. Christian Gallagher scored 13 points for Ventura (3-4).

Calabasas 84, St. Genevieve 65--Ryan Coleman had 30 points, 10 steals and nine assists for Calabasas (7-3) in a consolation game. Teammate Spencer Breen added 25 points.

In the La Canada tournament:

Notre Dame 73, Arroyo 42--Jorge Piedra scored 14 points and Notre Dame (5-2) outscored Arroyo, 42-19, in the second half in pool play.

Chris Forde had eight points, 12 rebounds and six assists for Notre Dame.

Village Christian 56, A.L. Fortune 40--Matt Thorpe had 17 points and Paul Tait added 12 for the Crusaders (3-3).

Glendale 89, McRoberts (Canada) 60--Armen Haghnazarian had 26 points, making six three-point shots for the Dynamiters (3-5).

Zhan Khodzyan and Ronnie Baghomian each had 10 points for Glendale.

Muir 78, La Canada 68--Isaac DeJohnette had 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Mustangs (5-3).

Muir outscored the Spartans (4-3), 23-18, in the final quarter.

Matthew Moore led La Canada with 31 points and nine rebounds, including 14 of the team’s first 17 points.

In the Bell-Jeff tournament:

Bell-Jeff 79, San Pedro 64--Guard Ruben Douglas scored 27 points and center Mike West had 20 points and seven rebounds for Bell-Jeff (5-1) in a quarterfinal game. Kent Dennis added 18 points.

Leuzinger 66, Sylmar 58--The Spartans (4-4) committed 32 turnovers en route to the loss.

Guard Brandon Jacobs had 14 points and eight assists for Sylmar.

Cleveland 75, Culver City 57--The Cavaliers (6-2) used a 19-2 run over the last six minutes of the second quarter to build a 43-22 halftime lead in a quarterfinal game.

Donald Holt had 21 points, 13 rebounds and six assists for Cleveland. Jerome Grant and Kenny Mason each added 16 points, and Grant had 11 assists.

Campbell Hall 63, Grant 51--Ronnie Polk had 22 points and Kevin Pullinger added 20 for Campbell Hall (6-2).

Robert Lozano had 18 points Grant (1-6).

North Hollywood 50, Kennedy 35--Keron Wilkerson scored 18 points and Corey Williams added 10 points for North Hollywood (3-5) .

Mike Calloway scored 11 points for Kennedy.

Monroe 51, Lincoln 37--Mark Cumbiss had 14 points and eight rebounds, and John Ennis added 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds for Monroe (1-6).

In the Van Nuys tournament:

Van Nuys 54, Verdugo Hills 41--Jesse Keane had nine points for Van Nuys (3-3) in a first-round game.

San Fernando 72, Sherman Oaks CES 52--Tyrone Pernell had 26 points and 13 rebounds and Ray Rivera added 17 points for San Fernando (3-3). Ed Raphael scored 17 points for Sherman Oaks CES (4-1).

In other tournaments:

Harvard-Westlake 83, Socastee 45--Jason Collins had 23 points and 15 rebounds and brother Jarron Collins scored 14 points against the team from Myrtle Beach, S.C., in the first round of the Las Vegas tournament at Cimarron Memorial High.

The Wolverines improved to 6-0.

Vallejo Hogan 61, Burbank 47--Steve Silveria scored 22 points and Juni Williams added 13 points for Burbank (5-2) in a first-round loss at the Berkeley tournament.

In a nonleague game:

Lynwood 70, Highland 53--Elliott Parmalee had seven points, six assists and four steals for Highland (3-8) in the game at Lynwood.
