Orioles Sign Eric Davis as Bonilla Replacement

Eric Davis, a former three-time Gold Glove winner, agreed Thursday to a $2.2-million, one-year contract with the Baltimore Orioles, who hope he can replace Bobby Bonilla.

Playing primarily as a center fielder, Davis, 34, hit 26 home runs and stole 23 bases for Cincinnati last season.

Baltimore also agreed to a $650,000, one-year contract with Pete Incaviglia and a minor-league contract with third baseman Kelly Gruber, who hasn’t been in the majors since 1993, when he was with the Angels.

Third baseman Charlie Hayes, who filed a formal trade demand with the New York Yankees a month after catching the final out of the World Series, agreed to a new two-year contract that guarantees him $3,275,000.

Former Boston Red Sox Manager Butch Hobson has greed to enter a Rhode Island state program for first-time criminal offenders.

Hobson acknowledged using cocaine in the past, but did not admit any guilt. He will be required to lecture young people about the dangers of drugs, and may have to submit to drug testing and undergo counseling.

Luis Gonzalez, traded from Houston to the Chicago Cubs in the middle of the 1995 season, returned to the Astros after reaching an agreement on a $1-million, one-year contract. The 29-year-old outfielder hit .271 last season with 15 home runs and 79 RBIs. . . . Left-hander Rheal Cormier and the Montreal Expos agreed to a $1.05-million, one-year contract. Cormier was 7-10 last season with a 4.17 ERA. . . . Catcher Tom Lampkin was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals by the San Francisco Giants for a player to be named or cash. St. Louis also agreed to a $425,000, one-year contract with catcher Danny Sheaffer.
