A drill sergeant already accused of raping three female recruits was charged this week with raping seven other female soldiers.

Staff Sgt. Delmar Simpson, 31, is now charged with crimes against 26 female soldiers in 1995 and 1996 at the military’s Aberdeen Proving Ground.

Simpson is being held in Quantico, Va., on the original charges of raping three female recruits, attempting to rape a recruit, sodomizing two privates and sexually assaulting two. Those charges involve eight women in all.

The new charges, filed Wednesday and announced Friday, involve 18 more women.

Simpson was accused of 16 rapes of seven women and forcible sodomy of two women. He was also accused of such offenses as making threats, indecent acts, indecent assault, stealing a watch and a gold necklace from female soldiers, extortion of one female soldier and obstruction of justice.

Simpson’s attorney would not comment on any specific charges.

“Sgt. Simpson and I will sit down and look at the new charges and deal with them appropriately,” said Army defense attorney Capt. Edward Brady.

Simpson is scheduled to enter a plea Feb. 3 and face court-martial Feb. 17. He was jailed in September. The new charges are the first to be filed at the base since a sex scandal there in November.
