PRODIGAL SON: The society of children of famous music figures with their own record deals just got a new member. Adam Cohen, the 24-year-old son of Leonard Cohen, has signed with Columbia Records and is writing songs for a debut album to be recorded with producer Steve Lindsey in the spring.

“His material is very literate, as you can imagine from his upbringing,” says Tim Devine, the Columbia A&R; vice president who signed the young Cohen. “His songs are rather wry and ironic stuff.”

And his voice?

“There are similarities, but he’s very different.”

Devine says that there’s talk of Cohen co-writing a song with his father, who is also a Columbia artist, and he has been collaborating with several others, including L.A. veteran Tonio K.--whose work also often wears the wry and ironic tag.

The biggest question mark concerns young Cohen’s concert skills, since he’s done very little public performing.
