College to Help Revitalize Gang-Plagued Streets

Housing projects in Bellflower will soon be the stuff of homework for a group of students at Cal Poly Pomona.

City officials have signed a contract with the university to put together a revitalization plan for a drug- and gang-troubled portion of the city that encompasses the homes of about 10,000 Bellflower residents.

Among the project’s goals is to propose sites for affordable housing units and suggest ways to preserve many existing residences. Officials said new retail centers, parks and public safety facilities could also figure into the study.

About 18 or more graduate students will work with faculty and urban development professionals to conduct the analysis.
