Numerous Ventura County high schools are regularly visited by local law enforcement officers, but Oxnard is taking it a step further--its three high schools will have city police officers on campus patrol full time (B1). . . . High school administrators say a trial program was successful in reducing fights and rumors of trouble.

Surfing Turf

David Ortega of Oxnard, on probation for fighting an out-of-town surfer, violated a judge’s order about not surfing at Port Hueneme Beach and received a six-month jail sentence (B1). Since then, the 22-year-old has lost his job and his girlfriend . . . “If you really love surfing, just ignore those other guys,” Ortega advises other local surfers.

He’s the Boss

When his employer went bankrupt, Hank Knaust, shown with his wife, Carol, took a logical step to protect his job: He bought the company (D7B). His H.K. Canning in Ventura cans beans, mushrooms and vegetables purchased from growers and helps develop canned soups for several manufacturers . . . Knaust’s grandfather owned a New York cannery for two decades and his father ran one in Illinois from 1951 to 1974.

‘Tis Better to Give

Beverly and Arnold Prepsky found a generous way to spread holiday cheer (B1). For the second year, the Oak Park couple has provided Christmas gifts for less fortunate families. . . . “It’s worth it when you see the kids,” Arnold says.
