Third-string quarterback Jason Garrett could be the Dallas Cowboys’ backup behind Troy Aikman in Saturday’s NFL first-round playoff game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Wade Wilson did not practice because of a knee sprain he suffered after starting in Sunday’s 37-10 loss to the Washington Redskins.

Garrett has played only briefly this year, including the fourth quarter against Washington.

The Atlanta Falcons are set to offer their vacant head coaching job to University of Florida Coach Steve Spurrier, according to published reports.

The Falcons fired June Jones Monday after the team finished with a 3-13 record. Spurrier, who is in his seventh season at Florida, led the Gators to an 11-1 record and a berth in the Sugar Bowl this year.

According to a report in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, a meeting between Spurrier and Falcon President Taylor Smith could be held as early as today.

“I’m willing to listen if they are willing to call,” Spurrier told the newspaper.

The Philadelphia Eagles signed linebacker Terry Crews to a one-year contract. Crew, 28, played 16 games for the Washington Redskins in 1995 and had seven tackles on the special teams. In total, he has played 32 NFL games with the Redskins, Rams and Chargers and has 14 special teams stops since he was drafted by the Packers in 1993.

To make room on the roster, Philadelphia released defensive tackle Keith Rucker.
