Work in Progress

The Getty Center came a long way from January (above) to December (below). Some buildings rose, others were finished and staffed, and landscaping began to take shape. Much remains to be done before the opening next December, when the public will get its first look at the near-billion-dollar complex, but anticipation has already reached a fever pitch. Finally gathering all the J. Paul Getty Trust’s programs on one campus, the center symbolizes a singular cultural powerhouse that adds enormous weight to Los Angeles’ cultural resources. The opening is sure to be the event of 1997--for the art world and the city.
