California came several years late to the nation’s economic recovery party, but the state should be celebrating all through 1997.

Here is what key industries will be up to:

INTERACTIVE MEDIA: The Internet will continue its inexorable sprawl in 1997 as electronic commerce begins to come online. But this may also be the year the Net gets too big for its bandwidth. Some Net watchers say the rapid growth may cause a collapse in parts of the global computer network. Video games will stage a comeback as Sony, Nintendo and Sega’s next-generation machines catch on. And the long-awaited digital video disc, which may do for movies what the CD did for tape, is expected to finally make its debut.
