Ray’s Condition Upgraded to Fair

James Earl Ray, convicted of assassinating the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., was upgraded from serious to fair condition. Ray, 68, is suffering from liver and kidney damage. He had been upgraded from critical to serious condition Thursday, when he regained consciousness after several days in a coma. He was transferred to the hospital Dec. 21, and it was unclear when he will be returned to prison.
