Spurrier Shows Philosophical Side

It has been nearly a year since No. 1 Nebraska hammered No. 2 Florida, 62-24, in the Fiesta Bowl, and there hasn’t been a day that Gator Coach Steve Spurrier has not been reminded.

“Listen, I’ve been clobbered before,” Spurrier said. “A lot of the Gator haters, they laugh and giggle when we get beat. People think I feel bad about that. I really don’t. I understand the way life is.”

Add Nebraska: Spurrier did make changes after the loss, the most significant being his hiring of Kansas State defensive coordinator Bobby Stoops to run the Florida defense. Stoops’ aggressive approach produced six defensive touchdowns, the most in school history.

Stoops says he did not dwell on last year’s Nebraska defeat. He said he reviewed the tape with his defense only once.

“I think it was a big awakening to all of them,” Stoops said.

How does Stoops like working with Spurrier?

“He’s very honest,” Stoops said. “He says what he feels. Some coaches get up and give comments to the media that are politically correct instead of what they really think.”
