A Toothy Win for the Blues

Jim Campbell’s scoring put the bite on the Boston Bruins Sunday, but he lost a tooth in the process.

Campbell’s two goals gave the St. Louis Blues a 4-2 victory over the Bruins at St. Louis.

But Campbell’s effort came at a personal expense.

“I don’t even know if it’s one of my real teeth or a fake one,” he said.

Campbell, the NHL’s leading rookie scorer, said he lost a tooth when Rob DiMaio poked him in the face with his stick in the third period. No penalty was called, even though Campbell was bleeding profusely after the play.

“I don’t think he did it on purpose, I don’t even think he saw me coming up behind him,” Campbell said.

Campbell was named NHL rookie of the month in October, but his production fell off after that. Sunday’s goals were his first since Nov. 23.

Campbell said maybe the recognition he got made him a target for other teams.

“I don’t seem to have as much room on the ice as I did before I was named the rookie [of the month],” he said. “Other teams are paying more attention to me.”

The Blues led, 3-1, after one period on Campbell’s 11th and 12th goals, and a power-play score by Ricard Persson. The Blues had not scored in 18 power-play attempts, and had not beaten the Bruins since 1994.

Chicago 4, Hartford 3--Alex Zhamnov scored unassisted with 5:26 to play, capping a three-goal, third-period rally as the Blackhawks broke a six-game winless streak with the victory at Chicago.

Hartford rookie goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere seemed well on the way to his second win in as many nights, stopping 30 of the first 31 shots he faced and leading, 3-1.

But James Black and Chris Chelios scored on consecutive shots 89 seconds apart to tie it. Zhamnov, the player acquired from Phoenix for Jeremy Roenick in the off-season trade that was so unpopular with Chicago fans, followed with his first game-winner of the season.

Montreal 2, Florida 1--Vincent Damphouse’s second goal of the game--during a two-man advantage--ended the injury-riddled Canadiens’ seven-game winless streak at Miami.

Montreal had been 0-4-3 during its season-worst slump.

Colorado 3, Dallas 2--Christian Matte had his first NHL goal and assist as the Avalanche ended the unbeaten road streak of Dallas in a meeting of Western Conference leaders at Denver.

Philadelphia 4 Calgary 2--John LeClair scored twice and Philadelphia stretched the NHL’s longest current unbeaten run to 13 games at Calgary.

LeClair scored the decisive goal--his 24th of the season--at 2:10 of the third period, rifling in a shot off a kick pass from Dale Hawerchuk. Hawerchuk had a goal earlier in the game for his 1,400th career point.

Postponement--The game between the San Jose Sharks and Vancouver Canucks was postponed because of a snowstorm in southwestern British Columbia.
