Suspect in Camarillo Bank Heist Arrested

FBI investigators have arrested an El Rio man in connection with the robbery of a Wells Fargo Bank branch in Camarillo last May, Ventura FBI supervisor Gary Auer said.

Agents on Thursday arrested Gregory Valenzuela in Camarillo after a joint FBI-Ventura County Sheriff’s Department investigation. Valenzuela was already in the custody of the Sheriff’s Department on charges unrelated to the bank robbery.

Investigators suspect that Valenzuela, 42, was the person who robbed the Wells Fargo branch at 425 Arneill Road on May 8.

Witnesses said the robber entered the bank about 4:45 p.m. and passed a note to a teller that read, “This is a robbery. I have a gun and I will shoot.”

Although the robber never displayed a weapon, the teller handed him an undisclosed amount of money, which he placed in a manila envelope before fleeing, investigators said.

Valenzuela will remain in the Ventura County Jail until U.S. marshals transport him to federal detention facilities in Los Angeles.

FBI officials said the case will probably be presented to a federal grand jury sometime within the next 10 days in an effort to obtain an indictment on charges of bank robbery.
