Old Carpool Van Will Make New Rounds on Graffiti Patrol

A local business is donating a van to Operation Clean Slate, a citywide graffiti removal program that enlists students. The 1991 Ford will be used to transport volunteer crews and supplies to areas blighted by graffiti.

State Farm Insurance, which has its Orange County headquarters in Costa Mesa, previously used the 12-passenger vehicle for carpools. The company will present the van to Clean Slate on Wednesday at TeWinkle Middle School.

The insurance company began working with the nonprofit organization about three years ago and has donated supplies and help on occasion, said Kelly Mulcrone, a State Farm spokeswoman.

Children who have worked with Clean Slate know how difficult graffiti removal is and how much the vandalism costs the city and county, she said. Thus they are less likely to pick up a marker or spray can.

“The sense of pride they’ll feel in their community keeps them and others from coming back and doing more vandalism,” she said.
