Lakers’ Bickering Won’t Help Anyone

Share

After a recent loss, Shaquille O’Neal blasted a teammate (Elden Campbell) anonymously, saying that some people are content with the big money and not working hard enough every night.

The next night I tune in as the Lakers lose to Detroit in overtime. In the fourth quarter and overtime, Campbell carries the Lakers before they eventually lose, while the great Shaq is nothing more than a spectator on the court for these two quarters because the Lakers can’t include him in the offense during late close games, since he can’t make a free throw. Now I ask you, Mr. $120 Million, who’s not earning his money?

I cannot understand why Elden Campbell has become the target of constant criticism. Unlike most athletes, when has he ever been more concerned about his personal recognition or statistics than the success of the team? Travis Knight has been a great addition but cannot yet be expected to compete against the likes of Malone, Webber, Grant, etc.

The outcry regarding Campbell’s salary is reminiscent of Jon Koncak’s contract, which at the time seemed outrageous. Laker management deemed it fit to recognize his consistent improvement and potential for even greater strides.

Let’s enjoy the Lakers’ return to elite status and not dissect every infrequent loss in an attempt to find a scapegoat.

Shaquille O’Neal has 33 points and 11 rebounds in a victory over Golden State, and the front page the following morning [Jan. 25] is another article ripping his free-throw shooting and declaring that this shortcoming will prevent the Lakers from advancing in the playoffs.

The guy is a fantastic addition to the team, a hard worker, doesn’t head-butt the refs or kick cameramen and is a positive role model in the community. It’s time to stop focusing on his contract and free-throw shooting and appreciate that he has made the Lakers a legitimate contender.

As far as his not working on improving his percentage from the line, I can personally dispute that. Last Sunday night, my little brother and I were invited by Shaquille’s friend to watch as he shot more than 1,000 free throws well into the night at a local gym. The guy works hard on his game, you just don’t hear about it. And he autographed a ball for us on his way out.
