Western High School senior Lorena Murillo attended the National Youth Leaders Conference in Washington. The program is for high school students who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and scholastic abilities.

Murillo, 18, was one of 350 students nationwide chosen for the honor. During the six-day trip last week, she met with officials from the three branches of the federal government, as well as with diplomats and the national press corps.

“The conference provides the opportunity for students like Lorena to distinguish themselves as tomorrow’s leaders,” said Michael Lasday, director of the conference.

Students also held a mock session of Congress to debate proposed legislation on an official national language and immigration reform.

Murillo, who works as a manager for a McDonald’s restaurant, was invited to attend the conference last year but had to decline because of family obligations.

In addition to school and her full-time job, Murillo also tutors kindergarten students and serves as secretary of the Western High French Club.
