Speaker to Discuss Her Homage to Ancestors

Share

An art instructor in the Cal State system who created a slide show as a homage to African American women will speak about her work at Rancho Santiago College on Feb. 10.

The instructor, Stephanie Johnson, premiered her slide show, “We Speak,” in 1995. It features interviews with nine African American women in Atlanta about their lives. The piece also uses black spiritual music.

Johnson said the work, like all her art, is a homage to her ancestors. It’s “an invitation to examine the delicate membrane which veils those who dwell in the spirit world from those we refer to as living,” she said.
