Crime Rate Rose Slightly in 1996
Although crime in Oxnard rose slightly last year, the city’s crime rate remains at levels not seen since the 1960s, according to figures released Monday by the Police Department.
Despite a large jump in homicides--from 11 in 1995 to 17 in 1996--overall crime rose only 1.8% over the same period. More than a third of those homicides involved juveniles, authorities said.
Overall, violent crime--homicide, rape, robbery and assault--dropped 4.1%.
The city saw most of its increases over last year in robbery, larceny and auto theft, authorities said.
The biggest drop was in rapes, down from 65 in 1995 to 57 last year.
Last year was the first since 1992 that Oxnard did not have an overall decrease in crime, officials said.
