Phone Cable Cut; 1,200 Disconnected
About 1,200 Anaheim residents and businesses were left without phone service when a telephone cable was severed, leaving the majority of those customers without service possibly until next week, said a Pacific Bell spokeswoman.
It was unclear whether a Caltrans construction crew caused the damage, but Pacific Bell engineers say that a landslide along Santa Ana Canyon Road about 3 p.m. Wednesday was the likely cause for the disruption of service, said spokeswoman Terri Steele.
“We have people working around the clock to return service,” Steele said. “They are having to dig through several feet of muck. . . . The mess is significant.”
A spokeswoman for Caltrans denied that its crews were responsible for the problem. Pat Gorniak said Caltrans crews had been working in the area earlier in the week to check the status of slopes that might have been affected by recent rainstorms. But the crews did not cause the damage, she said.
Based on the magnitude of damage, Steele said, it is likely that some customers won’t have service restored until Monday.
