17. CASTAIC LAKE--Trout fair to good in both lakes. Kastmasters and spinners working well. Largemouth bass slow for big fish, fair for small fish. Dave Horst, Saugus, 8-12 bass, on water dog. Peter Peterson, Castaic, four bass, largest 9-2, on water dogs in shallows.

18. LAKE PIRU--Trout action steady at north end. Rapalas and Needlefish getting most. Jim Loughrie, Glendale, five trout totaling 7 1/2 pounds, on rainbow Rapala at north end. Jeff Baratta, Santa Monica, five bass totaling 12-8, on Pig-n-Jig at San Felicia Cove. Jon Harwood, Camarillo, 5-6 and 3-2 bass, on Pig-n-Jig. Some catfish on mackerel at north end. Boat rentals reduced from $50 to $25 Saturday and Sunday.

19. PYRAMID LAKE--Largemouth and smallmouth bass best bets. Largemouth biting at 30-35 feet, mainly on night crawlers at Brazo and Bear Trap coves. Smallmouth biting a little shallower. Some striped bass. Boat rentals reduced from $50 to $25 Saturday and Sunday.

20. LAKE CACHUMA--Trout best bet. Trollers using Needlefish at east end accounting for most limits. Power Bait and night crawlers getting some. Larry Laumann, Hermosa Beach, five trout totaling 5-0, on frog- and bikini-pattern needlefish. Largemouth bass fair one day, slow the next.

21. LAKE CASITAS--Smaller male bass have moved into shallows and are biting on plastic worms and night crawlers. Larger females still at 25-30 feet. Paul Bappu, Ventura, 13-0 bass, on crawdad. Erin Powers, Ventura, 12-8 bass, on crawdad. Trout good.

22. CORONA LAKE--Trout action good at north end. Joe VanRoy, Hemet, 14-8 trout, on mini-jig at ramp. Harold Barry, Riverside, 14-2 bass, on night crawler at dam.

23. SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--Jason Tollison, Simi Valley, 14-3 trout, on Power Bait at Levitz Corner. Ron Bennett, Torrance, 14-0 trout, on Power Bait at south shore. Catch-out pond for kids opens Saturday.

24. IRVINE LAKE--Trout heavily stocked for weekend tournament (open to public), with limits and lunkers fairly common. Power Bait best bet. Largest a 9-5 by Wayne Rorex, Fontana, on rainbow Power Bait at red clay cliffs. Catch-out pond for kids opens Saturday.

25. LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Trout limits common, with salmon eggs edging Power Bait and night crawlers as the bait of choice. Lots of fish in the 4-pound class, with some pushing 7-0. Larry Edwards, Long Beach, 7-10 trout, on Power Bait near concession stand.

26. LAKE SKINNER--Largemouth bass have replaced striped bass as the predominant catch, but both species, as well as catfish, are actively feeding. Largemouth best on night crawlers and plastic worms; stripers on anchovies and surface plugs, and catfish on anchovies.

27. LAKE PERRIS--Probably the best bet among Southland lakes for largemouth bass. Largest, a 15-6 caught Thursday by David Loa, Colton, on night crawler at marina. Richard Alvarez, Whittier, 13-6 bass, on crawdad at east end.

28. SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--El Capitan: Largemouth bass and crappie very active. Matt Kobzeff, Huntington Beach, 12-0 bass, on purple plastic worm doused with Hot Sauce at north end. Jim and Peggy Bowman, San Diego, 29 crappie totaling 48 3/4 pounds, on shiners at north end. Miramar: Trout best bet. Some limits, some skunkings. Murray: All species slow, but some bass and trout are being caught. Otay: Largemouth bass in shallows but reluctant to bite. Largest, 10-2 by Ray Montera, Bonita, on mini-jig. Crappie action a little better. San Vicente: Largemouth bass picking up. Several over 5-0, most coming on night crawlers and crankbaits.

29. LAKE CUYAMACA--Trout action steady for half-pounders, which are biting on rainbow Power Bait and inflated night crawlers. Lots of quick limits.

3. AVILA BAY (Avila Beach)--11 anglers (1 boat): 17 red rock cod, 64 rock cod.

4. SANTA BARBARA (Sea Landing)--11 anglers (1 boat): 33 calico bass, 1 sand bass, 2 whitefish, 3 rockfish, 20 perch.

7. PORT HUENEME--6 anglers (1 boat): 90 rockfish, 3 sand bass, 1 halibut, 1 sculpin, 11 whitefish, 7 perch.

8. MARINA DEL REY--56 anglers (4 boats): 32 halibut, 25 sand bass, 5 sculpin.

9. REDONDO BEACH--67 anglers (3 boats): 4 calico bass, 35 sand bass, 13 halibut, 7 sculpin, 1 cabezon.

10. SAN PEDRO (L.A. Harbor Sportfishing)--30 anglers (2 boats): 135 blue perch, 23 sand bass, 25 sheephead, 5 calico bass, 1 red snapper, 2 sculpin, 5 salmon grouper, 10 rockfish, 6 whitefish, 1 sargo.

13. NEWPORT BEACH (Newport Landing)--10 anglers (1 boat): 12 sculpin, 1 rockfish, 2 blue perch, 85 mackerel.

14. DANA WHARF--17 anglers (2 boats): 17 calico bass, 17 sand bass, 7 sculpin, 16 sheephead.
