Tips for Travelers

Share

The strike by American Airlines’ pilots eliminated 20% of U.S. domestic flights, creating chaos at the nation’s airports. Here are some questions and answers about the strike:

Q: Will other airlines accept American Airlines’ tickets?

A: Major airlines such as United, Continental, Delta, Northwest, USAir and TWA have offered to accept American tickets if they have seats available. However, discount tickets may be restricted and holders of those tickets may have to pay more to get a seat on a different airline.

Q: What about American tickets that were issued electronically?

A: Holders of these so-called “ticketless tickets” must get a paper ticket from American before attempting to get a seat on another airline. These paper tickets may be obtained at an American Airlines ticket counter, a city ticket office for American, or a travel agent.

Q: Will there be any agents at American ticket counters during the strike?

A: American has said that ticket counters will be staffed for at least a few days after the strike begins.

*

Q: What if I decide to postpone or cancel my trip?

A: Travelers will be allowed to reschedule for a later date without paying the usual penalty or service charge. Unused American Airlines and American Eagle tickets can be exchanged for a full refund.

*

Q: If I already have a ticket on another airline, could this strike affect me?

A: Yes. Other airlines are accepting American passengers on a stand-by basis, but this could increase the odds that passengers--even those with tickets in hand--could be bumped. There simply will not be enough seats to go around. Get to the airport extremely early and be prepared to wait.

Q: What if I get stuck in a city that is not my destination?

A: Request a copy of the airline’s “condition of carriage,” which is its contract with air passengers. That will spell out what the airline is required to offer you if your flight is delayed or canceled. Travel agents advise that you assert yourself and specifically request information and assistance such as hotel accommodations and meals.

Q: Who can I call for help?

A: First, try your travel agent. American Airlines’ reservations number is (800) 433-7300.

THIS IS YOUR PILOT . . .

The pilots union told members already en route at strike time to land at the next scheduled stop, read the statement and leave the airplane.

“Ladies and gentlemen, we regret to inform you that the management and the pilots of American Airlines have failed to reach a working agreement. We are now forced to withdraw our services. We are very sorry for the inconvenience. An agent will be available to answer your questions.”
