Crash Closes Northbound I-5 for Hours
A car rear-ended an 18-wheel big rig near the San Onofre checkpoint Tuesday afternoon, injuring the truck driver, who was trapped and had to be rescued by firefighters, CHP authorities said.
A spokeswoman did not know the condition of the truck driver or whether anyone else was injured in the accident, which prompted the closure of all northbound lanes of Interstate 5 for almost two hours, beginning at 1:30 p.m.
A traffic jam nearly two miles long continued into Orange County when the lanes reopened about 3:30 p.m., frustrating afternoon commuters, authorities said. The accident is being investigated by the CHP’s Oceanside headquarters.
