The White House it isn’t, but City Council members will lead tours of the city’s new $2.8-million neoclassical City Hall on March 1 and 2.

“We’re so proud of it we want everybody to see it,” city spokeswoman Shirley Spitler said. “Hopefully--and I’m sure it will happen--everything will be finished by then.”

An upstairs storage room has yet to be completed and mounds of empty boxes remain scattered around the building. In addition, the bright red municipal seal in the lobby’s terrazzo floors is being repolished.

Municipal staff members moved into their new quarters over the Christmas holidays.

The 12,000-square-foot City Hall at 250 Central Ave. is regarded as the keystone of the city’s revitalization efforts. The tallest building in Fillmore, its timeless design is meant to complement the city’s quaint brick downtown that was almost completely rebuilt after the devastation of the 1994 Northridge earthquake.

City Hall sits in a former railroad right of way the city purchased and is redeveloping as a tourist attraction that will include a winery, two museums and stores.

The tours are expected to last about 20 minutes and will be conducted between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. both days. Refreshments will be provided.
