9 Elementary Schools to Require Uniforms

Magnolia School District’s student uniform policy will take effect at the beginning of the next school year on all of its nine elementary campuses, officials said this week.

Results of a districtwide parent survey presented to trustees this week showed that more than 75% are in favor of school uniforms. Trustees approved a uniform policy last spring but allowed each school to accept or reject it based on parents’ preference.

District officials said the number of parents responding to the survey at individual schools ranged from 63% to 86%. Of those, from 73% to 90% on each campus wanted student uniforms to be required.

A committee of parents, teachers and administrators will now work out details such as uniform colors, options and waiver procedures, Supt. Paul S. Mercier said.

“Each school could be a little different, but most districts have found that a common color works best in case students switch schools,” he said.

Schools will provide financial aid for families who need help purchasing uniforms, Mercier said.

The district’s two year-round schools will implement uniform policies in July, and students at the other campuses will start wearing uniforms when classes begin in the fall.
